What is Leadership? Understanding Leadership

We all are well aware, what is Leadership and what the key aspects of Leadership are.

Here in this post I would like to share my thoughts on Leadership with all of you which are combination of many aspects. Basically it’s summary of many superb thoughts which I learnt from Dr. Vivek Bindra, Sadguru, Saurav Ganguly, Harward Business reviews research articles and many more…

Leader (Definition): If you are able to see something which others are not able to see, the moment when you are able to see something, so people will start see you as a leader because you see something which other are not able to see. There are many ways to be a leader as like selection, elective etc. Today everyone trying to be a leader. But I don’t think that everyone should try to become a leader, if everyone is a leader than what others are

Qualities of Leadership: there is no particular qualities of leader, one thing is High Will & High Skills.

One major quality of a leader is , he/she recognize and appreciate everyone’s contribution.

Example from Ramayana (Hindu’s Holy Book):

One leadership lesson from Ramayana when Lord Ram was making “Ram Setu”. Many monkeys were there who part of “Ram Setu”. Few were there who worked 100% of their efficiency but few were not.  Here driven the leadership formula:

How much you did/How much you could do*100

It’s about potential & actual calculation.

Actual-50kg, potential- 100kg= 50/100*100= Did only 50% of their business.

Good leader always sees the intent, identify the intent & recognize every contribution.

Golden Statement: It’s not important that how much you did, important is how much you could do.

Practical Approach: Many people are there in corporate world who think, only they can do (Har eit ko lgata diwar mujh par hi tiki h”.

Golden Statement: Every tiny practical helps build the gap between a huge structures (Ramayana). In corporate world many people are there who are working at lower position who actually play an important role to build an empire or to execute any plan effectively. But they never get any appreciation and recognition from the top management. Small contribution always build an empire.

If a leader is good, he will motivate and inspire you to give your best. If your ability is to do 50%, he will guide and take 100% of your output/efficiency.

Golden Statement: A leader can communicate your worth and potential/efficiency in such a way that you come to see it in yourself.

Accountability, ownership, initiative, responsibilities: there are two things-initiative (all do)  & finitiative (only responsible).

Good Leader- High will & High Skills (Skills-Wills Matrix), leads to visionary. They always have a vision. They always work on best team, star performers etc.

Others, must have High Will, Leaders are there to provide skills to you.

If you have high skills, but lacking in will, than you are poisonous, liability & dangerous people in the organization. These kind of people will take away the Enthusiasm, ownership, initiative & responsibilities.

Oher quality: People/Folks Management, one example of Indian Cricket Team when Saurav Ganguly was the captain/skipper. Two players, Rahul Dravid & Yuvraj Singh.

One side where Rahul Dravid was a sincere player who always be on time, eat on time, sleep on time, play on time and always be in discipline & follow all the rules & regulation.

Other side, Yuvraj Singh, never follow any rules, he always love to do late night parties, outing etc.

But in show/performance on ground, both are well player and masters in their skills.

From here lesson is, in your team there are different people who have different behaviour. As a leader it’s your responsibilities how you will manage the human behaviour, which we call People Management.

If you are good in skills but not in behavior, anyone can replace you easily.

But if you have good behaviour/attitude, no one can replace you easily.

In Sum, Jobs are changing and role of leaders need to change. It must be

  • Direction to Informative
  • Exclusive to Inclusive
  • Monotonous to Innovative
